Mental Health and Exercise: A Dynamic Duo!

1

A way to manage mental health and depression.

Picture this: You’ve had a long day at work, your boss has been breathing down your neck all day, and you feel like the world is caving in on you. What’s the first thing you do when you get home? You turn on the TV and bury yourself in a bag of chips. Sound familiar? It’s a common response to stress and depression ( mental health ), but there’s a better way. Exercise!

Yes, exercise. I know it may sound daunting, but hear me out. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and depression. It releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote feelings of happiness and well-being, and they also help to reduce feelings of pain and anxiety.

Exercise can also help to reduce the levels of cortisol in your body. Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress, and it can cause a host of negative effects on your body, including weight gain, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. Exercise helps to reduce the levels of cortisol in your body, which can help to alleviate these negative effects.

But how do you start?

I know it can be overwhelming to think about adding exercise to your already busy schedule. That’s why I suggest the 10-minute rule. Set aside just 10 minutes a day to exercise. That’s it. Just 10 minutes. Try it for a week and see how you feel. If you decide to stop after 10 minutes, that’s okay. You’ve still done something good for yourself. Counsellor M, Du Plooy has an awesome article on ways to get started, go and read all about it here

Another great way to start is to attend a fitness class. MOHfit offer a variety of classes, from Mobility to boot camp to Zumba. Attend a class and see how you feel. You don’t have to commit to anything right away. Just try it out and see if it’s something that you enjoy. We offer a week to try before you join.

The excuse and how to overcome it.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But I hate exercise. I’m not a gym person. I don’t want to be surrounded by people who are in better shape than me.” Trust me, I get it. But the great thing about exercise is that there are so many different options. You don’t have to go to a commercial gym. You can go for a walk, ride a bike, or even dance around your living room. The point is to move your body and get your heart rate up.

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be fun! Find something that you enjoy doing and make it a part of your daily routine. Maybe it’s taking a walk with your dog, or playing catch with your friends. Whatever it is, find something that you look forward to doing.

It’s also important to remember that exercise is just one part of the equation. It’s important to take care of your mental health as well. If you’re struggling with stress or depression, it’s okay to reach out for help. Talk to a friend, family member, or healthcare professional. There’s no shame in asking for help. In conclusion

Exercise and mental health go hand in hand. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and depression, and it’s important to find something that you enjoy doing. Remember the 10-minute rule, and don’t be afraid to try new things. If you’re struggling with your mental health, reach out for help. You’re not alone, and there’s no shame in asking for help. Let’s make exercise and mental health a dynamic duo!
